Volvo Penta MD2020 Fuel Filter Replacement

Tools Needed

• 12 mm and 11 mm wrenches
• 17 mm wrench
• 19 mm wrench
• Small pump or sucker
• Plastic bag
• New fuel filters (prefilter and fine filter)
• Diesel fuel
• Oil

Safety

• Ensure the diesel fuel valve is turned off before starting any work.
• Be cautious when handling diesel fuel to avoid spills.

Steps

1. Turn off the diesel fuel valve located in the toilet locker behind the toilet paper.
2. Place a container under the prefilter to collect any water or contaminants.
3. Drain off water and contaminants using the plug at the bottom of the prefilter.
4. Turn the little screw at the bottom of the prefilter to release the diesel fuel.
5. Remove the 12 mm screw at the bottom of the prefilter to drain the remaining diesel fuel.
6. Loosen the 11 mm bolts at the top of the prefilter using a wrench.
7. Remove the prefilter and inspect the dirt and water collecting system.
8. Install new rubber gaskets (small one at the bottom, large one at the top) on the new prefilter.
9. Reinstall the drain plug at the bottom of the prefilter.
10. Mount the new prefilter and tighten the screws, but not too tightly.
11. Fill the prefilter through one of the side holes using a small pump or sucker.
12. Screw in the 17 mm screw to seal the prefilter once it is full of diesel fuel.
13. Turn on the diesel fuel valve to allow diesel fuel to flow into the system.
14. Open the vent screw using a 19 mm wrench to release any air from the system.
15. Pump the diesel fuel to the engine using the handle until the mark is at the top.
16. Turn the engine by hand to align the mark with the top point and pump out any remaining air.
17. Turn off the diesel fuel valve and remove the fine filter located at the back end of the engine.
18. Use the plastic bag trick to prevent spilling diesel fuel while removing the fine filter.
19. Apply a thin layer of oil on the gasket and fill in a bit of diesel fuel before mounting the new fine filter.
20. Mount the new fine filter and tighten it to the surface and then a half turn more.
21. Vent the diesel fuel system by opening the vent screw and pumping the diesel fuel to the engine.
22. Turn the engine by hand to pump out any remaining air from the system.

Tips

• The prefilter is a smart filter that removes big dirt and water from the fuel.
• Filling the prefilter through the side hole is an easier method than using the manual pump.
• The plastic bag trick is a smart way to prevent spilling diesel fuel while removing the fine filter.
• Applying oil on the gasket and filling in a bit of diesel fuel before mounting the new fine filter makes it easier to remove air from the system.
