Porta Sailing – Oil and filters change – volvo penta D1-30F
Tools Needed
- Oil filter wrench
- Fuel filter wrench
- Vacuum pump for oil change
- Funnel
- Gloves and rags for cleanup
- New oil filter (Volvo Penta D1-30 compatible)
- New fuel filter (Volvo Penta D1-30 compatible)
Safety
- Wear appropriate clothing, including gloves to protect hands from oil and fuel.
- Work in a well-ventilated area or outdoors to avoid fumes.
Steps
- Pump out the old oil using a vacuum pump.
- Place a plastic tray underneath the oil filter to catch any spills.
- Loosen and remove the oil filter by turning it counterclockwise with an oil filter wrench.
- Clean the mounting surface of the engine block where the oil filter was attached.
- Lubricate the new oil filter's rubber gasket with a small amount of new oil.
- Hand-tighten the new oil filter onto the engine block, turning it clockwise until it touches the engine block, then give it a quarter turn (90 degrees) more.
- For the fuel filter, loosen and remove it using a fuel filter wrench.
- Install the new fuel filter by hand-tightening it onto the engine, ensuring the arrow on the filter points towards the engine.
- Pour 3.6 liters of new oil into the engine through the oil fill hole, using a funnel to prevent spills.
- Check the oil level on the dipstick; it should be between the "F" and "L" marks. Add more oil if necessary, but do not overfill.
Tips
- Always replace both the oil filter and fuel filter at the same time as recommended by Volvo Penta.
- Be prepared for potential leaks when removing and installing the fuel filter, as it may be difficult to remove and could leak fuel.
- Fill the oil up to the maximum level on the dipstick to provide a small backup of oil for the engine when moving and heeling.

Frequently asked questions
What oil filter fits a Volvo Penta D1-30?

How often should I replace the oil filter on a Volvo Penta D1-30?
Change the oil and filter every 100 running hours or once a season, whichever comes first (check your manual for the exact interval).
What else do I need for an oil change on a Volvo Penta D1-30?
The correct grade and amount of engine oil (see the manual or the video), a new drain-plug washer, a filter wrench and a drain pan or oil extractor pump. Nothing exotic — it is standard service equipment.
What are the signs the oil is overdue on a Volvo Penta D1-30?
Dark, gritty oil well past its interval, low-pressure warnings — and milky or grey oil, which means water is getting in and should be investigated immediately.
How long does an oil change take on a Volvo Penta D1-30?
About an hour for a competent DIYer. Run the engine warm first — warm oil drains faster and carries more contaminants out with it.
