How to replace the oil filter on a Suzuki DF140

SUZUKI 4 Stroke OIL CHANGE – DF140A

Tools Needed

  • Allen wrench (provided by Suzuki)
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Screwdriver (flathead and Phillips, provided by Suzuki)

Safety

  • Wear gloves to protect your hands from oil.
  • Be cautious when handling the engine as it can be hot after running.

Steps

  1. Remove the cowling to access the engine components.
  2. Use the provided tool or a screwdriver to break loose and remove the six screws holding the side panel.
  3. Take off the side panel to expose the oil filter and drain plug.
  4. Using the Allen wrench, loosen and remove the oil drain plug. Replace the old compression fitting with a new one from your maintenance kit.
  5. Drain the old oil into a suitable container.
  6. Remove the oil filter using an oil filter wrench. Apply a thin film of oil to the surface of the new gasket before screwing on the new oil filter (part number 16510-61A31).
  7. Hand-tighten the oil filter until the gasket contacts the surface, then give it three-quarter turn.
  8. Replace the oil drain plug and tighten it by hand, ensuring not to overtighten.
  9. Refill the engine: about 5.7 litres (6.0 US qt) when the oil filter is replaced, or about 5.5 litres (5.8 US qt) without a filter change, using marine-grade 10W-40 (Suzuki recommends X-Star 10W-40 FC-W certified marine oil). These figures come from Suzuki's published oil-capacity chart for the DF140 and DF140A, not from a Suzuki manual we hold. Check the manual for your own model year before filling.
  10. Check the dipstick level and adjust the oil quantity if necessary.
  11. Run the engine for about ten minutes, then check for any leaks and recheck the dipstick level.
  12. Turn off the engine and let it sit for a few minutes before rechecking the dipstick level one last time.
  13. Replace the cowling and side panel.

Tips

  • Always use marine-grade oil to maintain your Suzuki outboard's performance and longevity.
  • Reset the digital readout by pulling the safety stop switch three times after changing the oil.

Frequently asked questions

What oil filter fits a Suzuki DF140 (140 hp)?

The Suzuki DF140 uses the oil filter sold as Sierra 18-7897, plus its OEM and aftermarket cross-references (3 compatible numbers are listed above). Confirm the number against your engine's model code and year plate before ordering.

How often should I replace the oil filter on a Suzuki DF140?

Change the oil and filter every 100 running hours or once a season, whichever comes first (check your manual for the exact interval).

What else do I need for an oil change on a Suzuki DF140?

The correct grade and amount of engine oil (see the manual or the video), a new drain-plug washer, a filter wrench and a drain pan or oil extractor pump. Nothing exotic — it is standard service equipment.

What are the signs the oil is overdue on a Suzuki DF140?

Dark, gritty oil well past its interval, low-pressure warnings — and milky or grey oil, which means water is getting in and should be investigated immediately.

How long does an oil change take on a Suzuki DF140?

About an hour for a competent DIYer. Run the engine warm first — warm oil drains faster and carries more contaminants out with it.
