Honda BF5 Water Pump Impeller Replacement

Tools Needed

• Flathead screwdriver
• Stand for tilting the outboard

Safety

• Ensure the outboard is on a stable stand before starting work.
• Wear appropriate clothing to avoid oil stains.

Steps

1. Tilt the outboard up using a stand to make it easier to work on.
2. Undo the two bolts holding the gearbox in place.
3. Remove the rubber cap from the gear rod and undo the bolt to release the rod.
4. Loosen the four bolts holding the impeller housing.
5. Remove the impeller housing and the old impeller.
6. Clean the metal plate between the gaskets.
7. Install a new gasket, the metal plate, another gasket, and the new impeller.
8. Reattach the impeller housing and tighten the four bolts.
9. Reattach the gear rod and tighten the bolt.
10. Clean the waterways while the outboard is disassembled.
11. Reattach the gearbox and tighten the two bolts.
12. Check the gearbox rod and reverse rod, ensuring they are properly engaged.
13. Drain the old gearbox oil using a flathead screwdriver.
14. Fill the gearbox with new oil using a funnel and a nozzle to help remove air.
15. Tighten the drainage plug and the wash plug.

Tips

• Re-grease the bolts holding the impeller housing for easier removal next time.
• Grease the impeller housing to help the new impeller slide in more easily.
• Check for leaks if the drained oil is milky or discolored.
