Honda 40HP Outboard Motor Winterization and Oil Filter Replacement Guide

Tools Needed

• Flathead screwdriver
• Drain pan
• Rag
• New oil filter (CC Air 18-79 13 seer marine filter)
• 5w30 API SN oil

Safety

• Warm up the motor before draining the oil to ensure it drains easily.
• Be cautious of hot engine parts when handling the motor.

Steps

1. Warm up the motor for about 5-10 minutes (or longer if using a separate fuel tank).
2. Stabilize both fuel tanks with appropriate stabilizer.
3. Locate the drain plug at the back of the motor and place a drain pan underneath.
4. Using a flathead screwdriver, loosen and remove the drain plug to drain the old oil.
5. Clean up any spilled oil using a rag.
6. Apply a bead of new oil around the gasket of the new oil filter.
7. Install the new oil filter by hand, snugging it down about two-thirds to one turn.
8. Replace and tighten the oil filler plug.
9. Pour 2 liters of 5w30 API SN oil into the motor through the oil filler hole until it reaches the top line.

Tips

• Running stabilizer through both fuel tanks helps prevent fuel degradation over winter.
• Leaving the fuel system full prevents moisture buildup in the tank.
• Draining and replacing the oil removes contaminants that could damage the engine over time.
